Public Health Road Map Released

On July 15, 2013, at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC), the Alzheimer's Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released The Healthy Brain Initiative: The Public Health Road Map for State and National Partnerships, 2013-2018.

This document focuses on the role that state and local public health agencies and partners can play in promoting cognitive functioning, addressing cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease, and helping meet the needs of caregivers. Specific action items are included in four areas, aligned with the Essential Services of Public Health:

Check back for additional materials, updates on ways to implement the Road Map, and reports on what others are doing to put the Road Map into practice.

Public Health Road Map

In July 2015, at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC), several researchers discussed their current projects in support of various Road Map action items.


Introduction: Matthew Baumgart, Alzheimer’s Association.

Alzheimer’s and Co-morbidities: Dr. Mark Snowden, University of Washington School of Medicine, and Dr. Siran Koroukian, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.


Economics of Alzheimer's: Dr. Paul Fishman, Group Health Research Institute.

Strategies to Promote Awareness: Dr. Amy Jordan, University of Pennsylvania.


Cognitive Aging: Dr. Kristine Yaffe, University of California-San Francisco.

Capacity to Consent to Clinical Trials: Dr. Christine Grady, Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.


Implications for Public Health: Angela Deokar, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

2007 Road Map

The first National Public Health Road Map to Maintaining Cognitive Health was released by the Alzheimer’s Association and the CDC in 2007. It was the first-ever framework for viewing cognitive health and Alzheimer’s disease as a public health issue
