Setting Up the Infrastructure for Early Diagnosis of Dementia in Lebanon

Georges Karam, M.D.
Institute for Development, Research, Advocacy and Applied Care
Beirut, Lebanon

2013 New Investigator Research Grant

Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease at early stages allows the best chance for treatment to temporarily alleviate symptoms, and it gives caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer's disease access to services and resources to minimize the burden of the disease. In Lebanon and other Middle Eastern countries, diagnosis is often delayed because of deficiencies in the healthcare infrastructure and other barriers. Furthermore, many assessment tests that western physicians use have not been translated and validated into languages, such as Arabic.

Georges Karam, M.D., and colleagues have proposed to translate several assessment tests into Arabic and to perform the studies needed to validate those tests in the new language. The tests to be used in this project include several tests that evaluate activities of daily living and dementia severity, as well as tests for conditions that can be confused with Alzheimer's such as depression and anxiety.

Once the tests are translated and validated, Dr. Karam's team plans to conduct conferences and workshops to train physicians and other healthcare providers on how to use them. Completion of this project will give physicians in Arabic-speaking countries access to these tools, which is a key step in improving the timeliness and accuracy Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.
